Construction
2012/12/23 – Raúl Pólit-Casillas
- The purpose of the Construction Subcommittee of SATC is to promote the generation and dissemination of ideas, concepts, designs, technologies and techniques related to extraterrestrial construction to support human presence in space and on planetary surfaces. These include site planning, in situ resources utilization, advanced materials, structures with high degrees of prefabrication and automatic / robotic deployment, advanced constructive design and implementation, and emergent processes such as digital manufacturing and rapid fabrication. For this purpose this subcommittee will also tackle likely applications of this developing knowledge to current challenges of terrestrial construction. The Construction Subcommittee will also participate in organizing conferences and other venues for exchanging ideas, concepts and technology related to this topic.
Education
2010/11/04 – Donna Duerk
- We are still working on our book and will be having a telecon next week on
Tuesday the 9th to discuss our current work. We have a Table of
Contents, plus drafts of an Introduction, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2.
The Preface is in limbo and will probably best be written after all the
other chapters are finished. Our goal is to have something worth
sending to internal reviewers by the end of the month and then after that
review, revise and send to several publishers. It is an ambitious
goal, given the nature of design by committee and the pace of our work so
far.

- David Nixon has set-up an
SATC-presence at the AIA’s KnowledgeNet website at http://network.aia.org/AIA/AIA/Home/.
(Thank you David!) Those web-links/blogs that are most-frequently
updated appear at the top of the AIA page, so David is encouraging everyone
to sign up as a site member (you don't need to be an AIA member to do so,
and it’s free) and to contribute relevant information to the blog so
that it will appear more prominently toward the top of the AIA page and be
more visible to new and interested parties. (The direct link to the

- After many years of anticipation and consideration (ok … and
procrastination), we’re finally starting to piece together an official
spacearch.org gallery!
Georgi Petrov has already created a
web-template (and explained some of the mysteries of HTML code to me
… thanks Georgi!) and I’m working on digesting and applying all
this new information and plugging images from the Out of This World book and text into the
gallery format (without screwing up the website). It’s a
slow-moving project, but heading in the right direction.
- Ted Hall has expressed interest in
beefing-up and overseeing the AIAA/SATC website page. (Once the
spacearch.org gallery is up and running, we will link it to the AIAA/SATC
site and have a more visible (graphically and otherwise) presence there
too.
- After ICES-Barcelona and the Valencia Workshop, our Co-Chair, Raúl Pólit Casillas began
working on his Masters of Space Studies at ISU in Strasbourg, France, which means
he’s is probably now fully-immersed, and sleeping about 3-4 hours per
night. (How’s it going Raúl?)
- Our “quarterly” Liaison subcommittee telecoms were short-lived
(I think we had 2 in the past year?) but we’re emailing one-another
as necessary.
